Sunday Roast

We are creatures of habit around here and all the kids love our traditional Sunday dinner of Roast, mashed potatoes, and carrots. Now that we have church in the afternoon we can get everything prepped before church and in the oven to cook while we are gone. There'e nothing like walking in the door, hungry and tired after three hours of being spiritually fed and being greeted by the aroma of a completed dinner in the oven. But when the oven is accidentally set to 550 degrees for four straight hours the smell that greets one when walking in the door is a little different. In fact the smell was so strong that it greeted us in the garage and lingers still this morning.

Ode to 2009

1. What did you do in 2009 that you've never done before?

I used coupons and for a good part of 2009 I was obsessed with grocery shopping. I was able to slash my huge shopping bill in half.

2. Did you keep your New Year's Resolutions and will you make more for 2010? My main goal (as it is every year) for 2009 was to become more organized. This is not something that comes naturally to me and I really have to work at it. For 2010 I am working on a short list of more concrete and specific goals.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Not that I can remember. I do have a couple of close friends and family giving birth in 2010 and I can't wait to cuddle their newborns.

4. Did anyone close to you die? No.

5. What countries did you visit? It was a domestic travel year for us and 2010 will probably be as well.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009? More time. It seems like there is never enough and that life moves at warp speed.

7. What date in 2009 will remain etched in your memory and why? December 3, 2009. I was called to be the Relief Society President.

8. What was your biggest personal achievement of the year? I became a morning person in September 2009 when Eli started seminary. Every morning I wake up at 5:30 am and head to the gym after I drop him off at the church. I've been trying to wake up early for years and failed miserably. Now it is natural for me.

9.What was your biggest failure? I have a hard time finishing projects. I am so full of ambition and grand ideas but seeing them to the finish is a struggle.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? We had a lot of illness in 2009. Our spring break trip was the worst when we were all sick. Anna, Lily and Jack were all sick during our cousins ski day in Utah and my sister in law had to drive up the canyon and rescue them. A few days later I came down with the worst case of bronchitis. We drove home from Utah and I begged the doctor to see me. Jonah was sick for three weeks this summer and Eli later got it. We've all been healthy since September. I am hoping we've built up immunity.

11. What was the best thing you bought? I hate to spend money on practical things like hot water heaters or a new roof. They cost a fortune and give me no aesthetic pleasure. A matress definitely fits into that category but I have to say our new bed (it's a tempurpedic matress) is our best purchase of 2009. We are sleeping so well.

12. whose behavior merited celebration? Jack definitely wins in this category. He is such a fun, energetic child and has to work so hard. We are always amazed as we look back and see how much he has progressed. He has done well in school this year and is a big help at home.

13. Whose behavior made you apalled and depressed? Congress. I am so disappointed in so many of the decisions our government is making. They seem to have no regard for public opinion or the future of our country.

14. Where did most of your money go? Braces. We have three kids in braces at once and the next three are right in line.

15. What did you get really, really excited about? The change of seasons. In late spring I get SO excited thinking about spending every Saturday at the lake and in early winter I get SO excited to spend every Saturday on the ski hill.

16. What song will always remind you of 2009? "Now Let Us Rejoice." Singing this song with thousands of other women in the Marriott Center at Women's conference was a highlight of the year.

17. Compared to this time last year are you a)happier or sadder, b)fatter or thinner, c)richer or poorer
a: happier, life just keeps getting better
b: the same, even all those trips to the gym don't seem to make much of a difference
c: richer

18. What do you wish you'd done more of? I wish that I would have done more creative projects and read more books.

19. What do you wish you had done less of? Yelling. I am constantly working on this.

20. Did you fall in love in 2009? We just celebrated our 16th anniversary on December 17th. With each passing year I'm always amazed that the love just grows deeper.

21. What was your favorite TV program? I have lost my enjoyment of watching TV. I keep hearing reports of great tv shows but I have little interest. The only show I watch is The Amazing Race. I still love it and this year several of our kids watched it with us.

22. Do you hate anyone this year that you didn't last year? I think this is such a dumb question. I don't think I've ever hated anyone but I've definitely been highly annoyed at times. I have found myself lately growing out of this and instead focusing on common ground.

23. What was the best book you read? I really enjoyed The Book Thief and I just read a book from 1972 written by a man who accompanied Ezra Taft Benson to Europe after WWII. It was called, "On Wings of Faith" and was an account of the many miracles that occurred on that mission. It was very inspiring.

24. What was your greatest musical discovery? I don't think I had one.

25. What did you want and get? A few days to myself. Jason is so great about letting me take off for a few days to recharge my batteries. I also got an Ipod Touch which I didn't realized I wanted until I got it. It's awesome.

26. What did you want and not get? There are lots of things I want to do to my house but I'm trying to be content.

27. What was your favorite film of this year? I didn't see a lot of movies this year but I have to admit that I liked Avatar. Jason forced me to see it and surprisingly I enjoyed it.

28. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you? I turned 37 this year. It was our week that we spend at the lake and I had my good friends Betsy and Kelly by my side. We went on an adult only waterski outing and then to dinner.

29. What one thing would have made your year more immeasurably satisfying? I wish I could live in the moment more and not take myself so seriously.

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept? Definitely my day to day is very casual, jeans and a t-shirt.

31. What kept you sane? Chocolate. And Jason who lets me call him multiple times a day at work. I have also learned to have more sincere prayers and I can tell a difference.
